Acre presents a way to sustainable development during the Climate Conference, in Germany

Acre prepares to be part of the agenda of Legal Amazon, a side event that will be held during the Conference of the Parties (COP 23), which began on Monday 6, in Bonn, Germany.

Together with other states of the region, Acre participates in Amazon-Bonn, a day dedicated to the Amazon, which will take place on November 14, at the Museum of Art. The event is a milestone for bringing together all the states of the Legal Amazon to discuss the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the region.

The agenda was widely debated by all secretaries of the Environment of nine states during the 16th Legal Amazon Governor’s Forum, held in Rio Branco in October of this year.
“We must be commited to the planetary agenda that can not be postponed, which is of an inclusive economy, green, sustainable”, said governor Tião Viana, reaffirming the Acre’s commitment to the global climate issue.

The COP-23 will bring together authorities from various countries to enable ways of promoting the objectives of the Paris Agreement and achieving progress in its implementation. The meeting is chaired by the Republic of Fiji Islands and organized by te United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in partnership with German government.

“Together, the Amazon states are taking a message for the world. During the COP-23, in Bonn, there will be together more than 200 countries. The message is: we need to protect our naturals resources, our forests and our rivers. But we can’t let the development at the same time, that’s why we take action proposals on a sustainable base”, explain the secretary of the Enviroment of Acre, Edegard de Deus.

Acre’s commitment to maintaining its inhabited forest – valuing its traditional people and communities, productive – fostering its low carbon production chains and conserved – reducing pressure on the forest and its natural resources, credence the state as a pioneer in public policies aimed to the new green economy agenda.

How to combine development, sustainability and preservation is a big question, which has in Acre a path pointed out by Chico Mendes (a rubber tapper leader assassinated in 1988, internationaly recognized for his struggle to defend nature), from the creation of extractive reserves to basis of the policies implemented today.

According to the National Institute of Space Research (Inpe), the reduction in deforestation was 34% between August 2006 and July 2017. Even with the preservation of the Environment, Acre inscrease the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 2002, Acre’s GDP was R$ 2.9 billion, and in 2014 the number jumped to R$ 13.4 billion.

The politic of Acre’s sustainable development has served as reference to a new climate agenda, guiding meetings as Governor’s Climate and Forests Task-Force (GCF), more recently. Its politic of Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation with Socio-Environmental Benefits (REDD+), makes it the first subnational government to receive compensation for results in carbon emissions reduction.

The Ministry of the Environment of Brazil (MMA), identifies the state potential at the forefront of commitments for the presentation of the Amazon. Everton Luceno, secretary of Climate Changes and Environment quality of the MMA talked about the Acre protagonism, during its participation in 16th Legal Amazon Governor’s Forum.

“The state of Acre has stood in national scenario, and even international, by the advance in its economic and ecological zoning, in its legislation and, especially, a caracteristic very important that it is social controll, the participation of community base, extractivists and farmers, who are very knowledgeable about each initiative”, said.
